Chelsea Approves £132m Exit: Insider Confirms Four Departures
Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that Chelsea intends to release Romelu Lukaku, Ian Maatsen, Hakim Ziyech, and Armando Broja this summer, with additional departures still possible.
In the first two years of the Todd Boehly era at Stamford Bridge, there has been a significant turnover of players. The Blues signed 12 players to permanent contracts last summer.
This necessitated the sale of a large number of players, with 14 leaving the club permanently.
These included big names like Kai Havertz and Mason Mount, who both joined Premier League rivals Chelsea for relatively high fees.
With a big spend once again reported to be in the works, more big departures will have to happen for the club to stay on the right side of Financial FairPlay regulations.
Indeed, it has frequently been suggested that some homegrown players, with Conor Gallagher being the most prominent example, must be sold so that Chelsea can profit solely from the transfer.
The possibility of the Englishman leaving in the summer is still being discussed, despite the fact that no contract renewal has been signed.
However, transfer insider Romano has essentially confirmed that four more men will be leaving.
Chelsea to let £132 million worth of players go
Indeed, he has revealed that Lukaku and Maatsen, both currently on loan, will join Ziyech and Broja in leaving, with plans already in place for the latter two to depart.
“We’re likely to see departures at Chelsea this summer, particularly with the players who are currently out on loan,” Romano told Caught Offside.
“As previously reported, the plan is for Armando Broja to be sold once he comes back from his loan at Fulham, and Hakim Ziyech can already be considered to have played his last game for Chelsea. I also expect Romelu Lukaku and Ian Maatsen to leave Chelsea.”
Broja can reportedly be bought by Fulham, where he is currently on loan, for a very low fee, but this does not appear to be the case, while Galatasaray’s obligation to sign Ziyech will reportedly be activated.
It is unclear where Lukaku and Maatsen will end up, but the former has been linked to the Saudi Pro League, while the latter wants to stay with Borussia Dortmund but has other offers.
More exits are possible.
The Chelsea exodus, however, may not end there, as Romano has indicated that more Blues players may be moved.
“But for the others we have to wait and see what happens,” he said.
For the likes of Gallagher and Trevoh Chalobah, who it’s frequently suggested will be moved on, that suggests their futures remain up in the air.
