Manchester United Contract Renewals: Jonny Evans and Tom Heaton Set for New Deals Amid Squad Overhaul
Manchester United are in active negotiations to extend the contracts of veterans Jonny Evans and Tom Heaton, as the club navigates through significant squad changes this season.
Jonny Evans: Veteran Defender’s Future at Old Trafford
Jonny Evans, 36, returned to Manchester United last summer as a free agent after an eight-year stint away. Initially brought in as a backup, Evans played a crucial role in 30 matches, including pivotal games against Liverpool, Manchester City, and Arsenal. His performance in the FA Cup final contributed significantly to United’s triumphant 2-1 victory.
Regarding his future, Evans remains composed, stating, “I’m pretty relaxed about it. I’ll see what the club say over the next couple of weeks but nothing at the moment in terms of discussions over a new contract, so we’ll see how it goes.”
Tom Heaton: Reliable Goalkeeper in Focus
Tom Heaton, 38, has been part of Manchester United for three years, with appearances in the Champions League group stage and the League Cup. Recently, Heaton was included in Gareth Southgate’s European Championship squad as a training goalkeeper, playing a supportive role to the team.
Gareth Southgate praised Heaton’s contribution, stating, “Tom will play an invaluable role on the training pitch supporting Jordan, Aaron, and Dean. Off the field, as someone we all know well, he will add to the positive environment we are always looking to create. We are grateful to Manchester United for their support in making this happen.”
Heaton is exploring various future options and remains open to continuing his career. Although Luton Town showed interest last year, United’s manager Erik ten Hag decided to keep him in the squad.
Manchester United’s Ongoing Squad Overhaul
In addition to potential contract renewals for Evans and Heaton, Manchester United is undergoing significant squad changes:
- Released Players: United have released Raphael Varane, Anthony Martial, and Brandon Williams as part of their squad refresh.
- Transfers: Omari Forson has transferred to Italian club Monza, and Shola Shoretire is also set to leave.
Manchester United’s focus on retaining Jonny Evans and Tom Heaton reflects a strategic balance of experience and emerging talent.
These ongoing contract discussions underline United’s aim to maintain squad depth and stability, preparing for the upcoming season with a mix of seasoned veterans and new prospects.
