Manchester United Face Decision on Casemiro’s Future as Pre-Season Begins
Manchester United have adopted a more decisive approach towards their players over the past year. Last summer, Eric Bailly and Alex Telles were instructed not to return to Carrington for pre-season, with their exits confirmed weeks later.
As pre-season 2024 kicks off, it’s no surprise that Jadon Sancho and Mason Greenwood are also absent, with Donny van de Beek close to a transfer to Girona. United sees no future for these players at the club.
However, the situation with Casemiro remains unresolved. The Brazilian midfielder was pictured at Carrington on the first day of pre-season despite ongoing speculation about his future. His absence from the FA Cup Final due to injury had already cast doubts over his position in the squad.
According to Fabrizio Romano, Casemiro is interested in a move to the Saudi Pro League. Last year, The Guardian reported that Sir Jim Ratcliffe questioned United’s deal for Casemiro during initial takeover talks, and Ineos is currently looking to trim the wage bill. As Manchester United’s highest earner, Casemiro’s future hinges on a substantial offer.
Unlike Greenwood and Sancho, Casemiro still has a place in Erik ten Hag’s plans. While United could have forced Casemiro out by telling him not to return for pre-season, they have chosen a more open-minded approach.
This doesn’t guarantee he will stay—last season, Fred played in early pre-season games before being sold to Fenerbahce, and both Anthony Elanga and Dean Henderson traveled on the US tour before being sold.
Manchester United will consider selling Casemiro if an acceptable offer is made. However, they remain confident in his professionalism and quality, viewing him as an asset until a transfer occurs. If no deal is reached by deadline day, Casemiro will not be ostracized from the first team.
Despite his declining force, the five-time Champions League winner still has much to offer. United acknowledges this and will ensure he contributes to the team if they are “stuck with him” for another season.
