Manchester United’s Summer Transfer Strategy: Sales to Finance New Signings
Manchester United are intensifying their efforts to sell several players this summer, as some new signings will need to be financed by outgoing transfers.
With a number of players out of contract next year, the club is focused on generating funds through sales.
Lindelof on the Market
Victor Lindelof is a key player United are looking to sell. The 29-year-old Swedish captain, who is out of contract next year, is a priority for United to move this transfer window.
A source mentioned that United are “trying hard” to sell Lindelof, who joined from Benfica in 2017. Last season, Lindelof made only 28 appearances, his lowest in a single United campaign, due to injuries.
Other Transfer Activities
United have already agreed to sell center back Willy Kambwala to Villarreal. Additionally, they are open to signing three new center backs.
An offer of around €65 million has been accepted for Lille defender Leny Yoro, while Everton have rejected two bids from United for Jarrad Branthwaite. The club has also agreed personal terms with Bayern Munich defender Matthijs de Ligt.
Jonny Evans signed a new one-year deal on Friday, but Erik ten Hag faces a shortage of senior center halves for United’s first pre-season friendly against Rosenborg on Monday.
Raphael Varane was released last month, and Lisandro Martinez is set to play in the Copa America final for Argentina on Sunday.
Harry Maguire has returned to pre-season training after recovering from a muscular injury, and Lindelof reported for pre-season on Monday.
Players Out of Contract
Many players out of contract next year are considered sellable or must-sell by the club. United are in advanced discussions to sell Mason Greenwood to Marseille, while Aaron Wan-Bissaka is available for transfer.
Facundo Pellistri and Scott McTominay are attracting interest, and United are open to listening to offers for Christian Eriksen.
As Manchester United navigate this transfer window, their strategy revolves around balancing incoming and outgoing transfers to strengthen the squad for the upcoming season.
