Roy Keane Unveils Theory on Salah and Haaland Treatment: Allegations of Preferential Treatment Towards Liverpool
Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah enjoyed himself against Spurs after a testing week, and before the game, Roy Keane drew comparisons to an Erling Haaland incident.
Liverpool needed to perform well against Spurs. Recent results rendered the game competitively irrelevant, but it was critical to dispel the ill will that had grown within the club.
There was a sense that Jürgen Klopp’s farewell was going bad. That was emphasised by the tense scenes on the touchline between Mohamed Salah and West Ham, where the two Liverpool icons were seen at odds.
That argument occurred just moments before West Ham equalised, ending Liverpool’s title hopes. However, Roy Keane has suggested that the poor run of results exacerbated the tension between Salah and Klopp.
“Obviously then I think when you have this spat with your manager and the star man [Salah], it doesn’t help when the results aren’t going your way,” said Keane on Sky Sports.
A comparison was made by him with Manchester City forward Erling Haaland, suggesting that Liverpool and Salah were treated differently with the reaction they received.
“Haaland was seen yesterday [against Wolves] being brought off, not too happy, behaving like a spoilt brat, but because the game was won, goals were scored, it’s almost forgotten about. I think because results haven’t been going Liverpool’s way, that’s almost highlighted.”
The Sky Sports panel was then questioned by Keane over whether Haaland was allowed to be a “spoiled brat” if four goals were being scored by him, as was the case against Wolves.
The former Manchester United midfielder bluntly responded with “no, not really”, leading to an awkward silence in the studio — broken by the laughter of former Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge.
While Keane refused to excuse Haaland’s behaviour, he did admit that clashes with the manager appear to be more frequent during difficult times for the team.
While another flawless finish sees Manchester City cruising to another title, Liverpool’s chances are shattered. Whether rightly or wrongly, the argument between Salah and Klopp will be the lasting memory of that collapse.
