Manuel Ugarte Provides Worrying Fitness Update Amid Doubts for Manchester United’s Clash Against Southampton
New Manchester United signing Manuel Ugarte has provided a concerning update about his fitness, raising doubts about his availability for the upcoming match against Southampton.
Ugarte, who joined United from Paris Saint-Germain on deadline day, has yet to play for the club due to registration issues that prevented him from being selected for the Red Devils’ 3-0 defeat to Liverpool.
He watched the game from the stands as his new teammates suffered a heavy loss at Old Trafford.
During the international break, Ugarte played for Uruguay in two goalless draws against Paraguay and Venezuela. In the latter match, he was a standout performer in midfield, giving United fans a glimpse of his potential impact.
However, despite playing the full 90 minutes against Venezuela on Tuesday, Ugarte revealed post-match that he had been ill, suffering from a fever in the hours leading up to the game. “I feel a bit down now, but I was fine during the match despite the heat,” Ugarte told AUF TV (via Metro). “I had a bit of a fever yesterday, but we managed to draw and get a point.”
He also commented on the match, saying, “It was a tough game, and we didn’t play very well. Venezuela are strong at home, and getting a point is important given how difficult the qualifiers are.”
According to the Manchester Evening News, Ugarte will return to Manchester for evaluation before Saturday’s clash with Southampton. United will be hoping their new signing will be fit and available for selection by Erik ten Hag.
