Chelsea May Make Surprise U-Turn on Ben Chilwell: Exiled Star Could Rejoin 25-Man Squad
Chelsea may be reconsidering their stance on left-back Ben Chilwell, who has been exiled from the squad this season. After a potential move to Turkey fell through, Chilwell could make a surprise return to Chelsea’s 25-man Premier League squad for the 2024/25 campaign.
Chilwell, who has yet to feature for Chelsea this season, was informed by new manager Enzo Maresca that he was free to leave.
With the Turkish transfer window remaining open for an additional two weeks, there was hope for a move abroad. However, as that option failed to materialize, Chilwell might now be included in the Premier League squad, which must be submitted by Friday.
Reports suggest Chilwell has been training with the first team intermittently, especially when numbers were low due to injuries. Nonetheless, he has been training away from the senior squad when everyone is fit. It remains uncertain if he will return to regular first-team training if included in the Premier League squad.
Chilwell’s opportunities for playing time could be limited, particularly as he was excluded from Chelsea’s UEFA Conference League squad. Maresca has previously stated that even if Chilwell or other out-of-favor players remain at the club, it does not guarantee they will be involved in matches.
Maresca had expressed concerns about Chilwell’s fit in the team, suggesting that a move away for regular playing time might be beneficial. Chelsea will face Bournemouth at the Vitality Stadium this weekend, where they have struggled in recent visits, managing only one win in their last four matches.
