Martin Odegaard and Declan Rice sent messages to their Arsenal team-mates after missing Sunday’s north London derby victory over Tottenham.
Gabriel Magalhaes’ second-half header was enough to secure a third consecutive away win over their rivals. Spurs started stronger and arguably created more, but the Gunners – without key players Odegaard and Rice – got the job done for the third season in a row.
Odegaard missed the game with an injury picked up while with Norway during the international break, and is expected to also miss next week’s trip to Manchester City. Rice was serving a one-match ban after being sent off against Brighton last time out.
But both watched on as Arsenal secured more north London bragging rights. Odegaard posted three love hearts over an image of Gabriel celebrating, after Rice had posted: “I love this team!!!!!!” on his page.
Rice is available again for the trip to Atalanta in the Champions League on Thursday, but Odegaard is facing a spell on the sidelines. Mikel Arteta will also be hoping Bukayo Saka does not join his captain on the treatment table after the winger limped out of the game.
Mikel Arteta praised Arsenal’s resilience and adaptability following their 1-0 victory over Tottenham, despite missing key players Declan Rice and Martin Ødegaard. Gabriel Magalhães’ header secured the win, making it three consecutive away victories against Spurs and maintaining Arsenal’s strong start to the season.
Arteta highlighted the challenges his team faced due to injuries and suspensions but commended their determination and willingness to perform the “ugly” aspects of the game. The Gunners have now won three of their last four league games and sit two points behind Manchester City.
Arsenal’s success in recent north London derbies, including their current three-game winning streak at Tottenham’s ground, reflects their strong form. Arteta believes this victory will bolster the team’s confidence for the upcoming Champions League match against Atalanta and their Premier League clash with City.
Arsenal’s proficiency from set-pieces was evident once again, with Magalhães’ goal underscoring the impact of set-piece coach Nicolas Jover, whom Arteta has praised for his contributions.
Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou, on the other hand, expressed frustration with his team’s inability to capitalize on chances and their lack of composure in front of goal. Despite a strong start to the game, Spurs struggled to break down Arsenal’s defense and failed to convert their opportunities.
In other Premier League action, Newcastle United came from behind to secure a 2-1 win at Wolves. Harvey Barnes’ stunning goal sealed the victory after a first-half strike from Mario Lemina had given Wolves the lead. Newcastle’s fightback, aided by a crucial goal from Fabian Schär and a spectacular strike from Barnes, moved them up to third place, just two points behind Manchester City.
