Phil Jones Analyzes Dalot’s Tactical Impact in Man United’s 0-0 Draw with Palace: Full-Back Key to Midfield Overload
Former Manchester United defender Phil Jones appeared as a studio pundit for Sky Sports during the team’s match against Crystal Palace. Now retired, Jones is involved in punditry while also holding a coaching role in United’s academy.
Over the weekend, he analyzed the 0-0 draw with Crystal Palace and offered more insightful commentary than Jamie Redknapp.
Jones praised a tactical move by Erik ten Hag that led to United’s dominant first half at Selhurst Park. He highlighted Diogo Dalot’s role, noting how the full-back inverted into midfield during possession, helping United create an overload.
Jones explained, “Dalot is coming inside as a number six and controlling the game. United have been good in possession, creating chances. Dalot’s movement caused overloads, with Mainoo playing as a 10 and Diogo taking Mainoo’s position.” Palace struggled to cope with this tactic in the first half.
United created the bulk of chances, hitting the bar twice and forcing saves from their former academy goalkeeper, Dean Henderson.
Palace eventually made tactical adjustments, bringing on winger Ismaila Sarr and midfielder Jefferson Lerma, which shifted the game.
United held on with goalkeeper Andre Onana making crucial saves, but they regretted not capitalizing on their first-half dominance.
Dalot’s impact was significant, creating three goal-scoring opportunities, completing 92% of his passes, and contributing defensively with clearances, interceptions, and ball recoveries.
Playing out of position at left-back due to Luke Shaw’s injury, Dalot’s performances may complicate Shaw’s return, especially with Mazraoui solidifying the right-back spot.
Dalot’s role in the team’s tactical setup is crucial, and a stronger performance will be needed against Tottenham in their next game.
