Erik ten Hag Defies Solskjaer Advice on McTominay and Maguire Amid Man Utd Struggles
Erik ten Hag has reportedly disregarded the advice of his predecessor Ole Gunnar Solskjaer regarding the roles of Scott McTominay and Harry Maguire at Manchester United.
Both players were key figures under Solskjaer, with Maguire even being made captain during his tenure. However, under Ten Hag, McTominay was sold to Napoli this summer, and Maguire was stripped of the captaincy, finding himself largely out of the Dutch manager’s plans.
Despite Ten Hag’s changes, Solskjaer had previously praised both players for their professionalism and leadership qualities.
In a 2023 interview, Solskjaer highlighted Maguire’s resilience and personality, defending his decision to appoint him as captain during his time in charge.
He believed both players had much to offer, particularly Maguire, whom he credited with handling difficult situations well.
United have struggled this season, leading to increasing pressure on Ten Hag, whose team has won just two of their first seven Premier League games, leaving them in 11th place. After a 1-1 Europa League draw against FC Twente, the calls for improvement have grown louder. Meanwhile, Solskjaer has made it clear that he would be open to returning to the United managerial post if the opportunity arose.
As United prepare for a tough run of fixtures, including hosting Spurs and a Europa League clash with Porto, Ten Hag has urged fans to remain patient amid the team’s difficult start to the season.
