Phil Jones Reveals He Decided to Leave Man Utd After Just 20 Minutes Under Erik ten Hag
Phil Jones recently opened up about his decision to leave Manchester United after just 20 minutes of his first training session under Erik ten Hag.
The former defender, who had spent 12 years at the club, admitted that his knee injury and the physical demands of professional football were too much to handle.
After struggling to complete a simple warm-up drill during that session, Jones realized he couldn’t continue playing at that level.
On the High Performance podcast, Jones revealed that his excitement for a fresh start under Ten Hag quickly faded when he found himself unable to pass the ball with his right foot due to his lingering knee issues.
Despite attempting to adapt by using his left foot, he soon realized the extent of his physical limitations and concluded that he could no longer perform at the required level.
Jones told the physio that this would be his final training session, and it indeed was. He officially retired from playing football and has since transitioned into coaching and punditry, including appearances as an analyst on Match of the Day.
His decision marks the end of a career plagued by injuries, but he remains involved in the sport through these new avenues.
