Xabi Alonso Dismisses Man Utd Links Amid ‘Private Agreement’ on Erik ten Hag’s Future
Xabi Alonso has reportedly made his stance clear on the idea of managing Manchester United, despite being linked with the job as a potential replacement for Erik ten Hag.
With Ten Hag’s position under pressure following Manchester United’s disappointing start to the Premier League season, the club is now without a win in five consecutive matches across all competitions, including a goalless draw against Aston Villa.
The result has led to increased speculation about Ten Hag’s future at Old Trafford.
Several names have been suggested as possible successors to Ten Hag, including Thomas Tuchel, Gareth Southgate, and Simone Inzaghi.
Alonso, who is currently in charge of Bayer Leverkusen, has also been mentioned as a potential candidate after his impressive unbeaten run in the Bundesliga with his team.
However, Alonso’s strong ties to Liverpool, where he played 210 games and won the Champions League in 2005, seem to suggest that he wouldn’t be inclined to take on the role at Manchester United.
During his last visit to Anfield, Alonso expressed his deep connection to Liverpool, saying, “Once a Red, always a Red,” while speaking to the club’s website in 2022.
He added, “It’s not a logo, I think it’s a reality. Not just my case; I think that most of us feel really close to the club.
Wherever you are in the world, Liverpool fans remember you and they keep you closer to the club. That’s the best thing about Liverpool. All the support and all the family that’s around the world.”
Manchester United’s poor form has left them in 14th place in the Premier League standings, with only one win in their first seven games.
The club’s leadership is expected to meet soon in both Manchester and London, with co-chairman Joel Glazer flying in to attend the discussions.
Despite the pressure on Ten Hag, reports from ESPN suggest that there is a “private agreement” among United’s top officials to avoid sacking him for now, especially after investing £200 million in new signings during the summer transfer window.
Manchester United will next face Brentford at Old Trafford on October 19 as they look to turn their season around.
