Erling Haaland Responds to Arsenal Backlash After Controversial Incident, Thanks Man City Fans for Support
Erling Haaland has expressed gratitude to Manchester City and their fans for their support following criticism from Arsenal supporters and former striker Ian Wright.
The controversy arose after Haaland threw the ball at Arsenal defender Gabriel’s head during Man City’s injury-time equalizer in their 2-2 draw at the Etihad Stadium last month.
The incident sparked anger among Arsenal fans, with Wright taking to social media to condemn Haaland’s actions, calling them a “coward’s move.” Wright’s comments came nearly 24 hours after the game, where he expressed disappointment over Haaland throwing the ball when Gabriel’s back was turned, questioning the striker’s sportsmanship.
Another Arsenal legend, Martin Keown, also criticized Haaland, calling him Arsenal’s “personal enemy” following the incident, while Piers Morgan described him as a “nasty piece of work.”
Haaland took two weeks to respond to the backlash but eventually addressed it in his first Instagram post in almost a month. He thanked the club and its fans for their support and urged everyone to focus on the future, emphasizing a positive outlook.
Despite the controversy, Haaland has been in outstanding form this season, scoring 11 goals in nine appearances across all competitions, including two hat-tricks.
Although he didn’t score in Man City’s recent 3-2 win over Fulham, the team remains close to early Premier League leaders Liverpool.
Real Madrid’s Antonio Rudiger recently praised Haaland’s incredible physical presence, calling him an “absolute beast” and highlighting the difficulty defenders face when trying to stop him. Rudiger admitted that Haaland’s strength and dominance in the air make him nearly impossible to beat in certain situations.
