Odegaard Reacts to Ten Hag Remarks on Arsenal Prior to Clash with Manchester United
Manchester United will host Arsenal at Old Trafford this weekend in the Premier League.
Arsenal captain Martin Odegaard has insisted that Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag’s comment about the two clubs’ meeting in September has not given the Gunners any extra motivation for this weekend’s match at Old Trafford.
Arsenal rallied from behind to defeat United 3-1 at the Emirates Stadium on September 3, scoring twice deep into extra time to secure all three points. At 1-1, United thought they had secured all three points through Alejandro Garnacho, but his goal was ruled offside after a VAR review.
It was a marginal call and United felt the wrong decision had been made. United also felt they were worthy of a penalty after a foul on debutant Rasmus Hojlund inside the box.
Neither decision went United’s way, giving Arsenal confidence as the game entered its final stages. Despite having ten shots to Arsenal’s seventeen, Ten Hag believed United deserved all three points.
“I think we deserved to win this game, but you don’t always get what you deserve,” he told BBC Sport shortly after the game.
The Dutchman suddenly brought up the defeat at Arsenal in February, insisting that his team should have won all three points: “I believe we can beat any opponent.” Away or at home.
“Sometimes away, we have to believe more. We could have won in Arsenal. We actually deserved that win.”
Ten Hag’s continued denial that United should have beaten Arsenal would give the Gunners an extra boost of motivation ahead of Sunday’s match at Old Trafford. However, Odegaard insists that is not the case.
“Honestly, no,” Odegaard told Football.london. “I do not think so.
“It’s like any other game we are playing for at the moment. I don’t think we need any extra motivation at the moment.
“I think there is enough there. We know what we are playing for. We know the task. We have to win every game and that is what we are going to try to do.”
Arsenal will visit M16 in the midst of the Premier League title race. They are currently one point ahead of Manchester City, but the latter will play first this weekend, potentially putting the onus on Arsenal to respond in their final away game of the season.
