Andre Onana Names Four Man Utd Players Responsible for Disastrous Premier League Campaign
Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana has highlighted four senior players who he believes should bear the brunt of criticism for the team’s disappointing Premier League season.
Despite a 2-0 victory over Brighton on Sunday, United ended the season in eighth place, their lowest ever finish in the Premier League, and their hopes for European football now hinge on the outcome of the FA Cup final against Manchester City.
In the latest episode of The Overlap, brought to you by Sky Bet, Onana addressed the criticism that both he and his teammates have faced from fans, former players, and pundits. Since his £47.2 million transfer from Inter Milan last summer, Onana has experienced a mixed season and has often been in the spotlight.
Onana emphasized that he does not let the criticism affect him personally but expressed concern about its impact on younger players in the squad.
To shield these younger teammates, he believes that more experienced players should take the majority of the blame.
He mentioned that he, along with other senior members of the team, should be the ones to shoulder the responsibility for the season’s failures, thereby protecting the younger players from undue pressure.
This stance reflects Onana’s leadership and understanding of the dynamics within the team.
As Manchester United prepares for the crucial FA Cup final, the role of senior players in handling criticism and guiding the squad will be more important than ever.
“For me, I don’t pay attention to it. I have come into this team to take bullets, because we are under construction – at the moment, we are not the best,” Onana said.
“We have other teams who are doing better than us and we have to be honest and recognize that. If things and when things are going wrong, don’t go for the youngest player – I’m here to take it, Bruno [Fernandes], Casemiro and Harry [Maguire] are there and we are used to it.
“When it’s people who were sitting where I’m sitting, who won everything, sometimes it’s bizarre – we are in the same boat.
“We try to follow your thing and what you did. For me, I don’t mind, but other people may be affected. For me, to be honest, it’s just a part of the game.”
