Anthony Martial Offered Record-Breaking Contract by AEK Athens After Manchester United Exit
Anthony Martial, the former Manchester United forward, has reportedly been offered a highly lucrative contract to join Greek club AEK Athens, which would make him the highest-paid player in the club’s history.
Martial, who left Manchester United in the summer after nine years at the club, has been without a team since his departure.
Despite links to potential moves to Saudi Arabia and the United States, it seems AEK Athens is now a strong contender for Martial’s next destination.
The Greek Super League side is reportedly ready to surpass their current wage structure to secure the French striker, who earned £250k per week during his time at United.
If Martial accepts the offer, he would surpass the current highest earner at AEK, former Tottenham star Erik Lamela.
The potential move could lead to an interesting dynamic between the two players, especially considering the infamous incident in 2020 when Martial was sent off for striking Lamela during a match between Manchester United and Tottenham.
AEK Athens’ director, Panagiotis Kone, has been in London recently for talks with Chelsea regarding David Datro Fofana and could play a significant role in negotiations with Martial.
Although Lille was also rumored to be interested in Martial, their president, Olivier Letang, has denied any contact, stating that the club is not looking to add another striker to their roster.
If Martial does make the move to Greece, he would join the ranks of other former Premier League stars like Willian, who recently signed with Olympiacos after leaving Fulham.
The move would represent a new chapter in Martial’s career, offering him a fresh start in a different European league.
