Ben Chilwell Fights for His Future at Chelsea
Ben Chilwell is determined to secure his place at Chelsea, and his recent performance against Club America shows he is not giving up without a fight. Throughout most of his time with the Blues, Chilwell has been the team’s first-choice left-back.
The 27-year-old has faced numerous injuries, resulting in significant time on the sidelines. However, when fit, Chilwell has consistently been the preferred option at left-back.
Despite this, Chilwell’s future at Stamford Bridge is now uncertain. New manager Enzo Maresca is struggling to find a consistent role for him, raising concerns about his position in the team.
Chilwell’s recent impressive performance against Club America could help change Maresca’s perspective. During the match, Chilwell made an incredible double block to prevent a goal in Chelsea’s 3-0 win over the Mexican side.
His teammates were clearly impressed, with several congratulating him for his efforts, as noted by journalist Simon Johnson.
With Marc Cucurella currently absent from the squad following his participation in Euro 2024, Chilwell has a prime opportunity to demonstrate his abilities. Cucurella, who finished last season as Chelsea’s No. 1 left-back, has returned to Chelsea’s training ground after his time in Germany.
Chilwell can still be a valuable asset to Chelsea. Although Maresca prefers using inverted full-backs, this does not mean Chilwell should be disregarded. There will be times during matches when Chelsea requires additional width, and Chilwell is well-suited to provide that option.
Since joining Chelsea from Leicester City, Chilwell has consistently advanced down the left wing, offering an attacking option.
While Chelsea might consider selling Chilwell due to his less-than-ideal fit for Maresca’s system, the variety of opponents and numerous matches make retaining him a potentially valuable decision.
With so many games and diverse opponents, keeping Chilwell could be beneficial for Chelsea.
