Chelsea Director and Glazers in £650m Bidding War for The Hundred Cricket Teams Amid Boardroom Tensions
Chelsea director Jonathan Goldstein has joined the Glazer family, who still own a major stake in Manchester United, in the bidding race for one of the franchises in The Hundred cricket tournament, with bids reportedly exceeding £650 million. The auction process, which closed its first round of bids on Friday, saw over 100 offers placed for the eight teams.
Goldstein, alongside the Raine Group, has expressed interest in purchasing one of the franchises, although it’s not linked to Chelsea.
Meanwhile, several members of the Glazer family, excluding Joel Glazer, have also shown interest in buying into The Hundred.
High-profile bids include Indian billionaire Sanjiv Goenka’s £140 million offer for the London Spirit and a £120 million bid for the Oval Invincibles.
Goldstein’s involvement in this cricket venture comes amidst growing tension at Chelsea. Reports suggest a potential internal conflict between Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital’s co-founders, Behdad Eghbali and José E. Feliciano.
Boehly is reportedly keen on buying out Clearlake’s stake in Chelsea, but Eghbali and Feliciano are resistant, sparking concerns of a “civil war” within the club’s boardroom.
Despite this internal turmoil, Chelsea’s on-field performance improved last season, finishing sixth in the Premier League after a disappointing 12th-place finish in the 2022/23 campaign.
