Chelsea Eye Dominic Calvert-Lewin as Budget-Friendly Alternative to Victor Osimhen
Chelsea might secure a transfer target for half the value that Frank Lampard once placed on him. Lampard, who previously managed Everton, had valued Dominic Calvert-Lewin at up to £80 million. Despite Calvert-Lewin’s injury struggles during the 2022-2023 season, Lampard highly valued the striker’s abilities.
Calvert-Lewin, who suffered from knee and hamstring injuries, was seen by Lampard as a significant asset to any team. Lampard highlighted the impact that a high-value striker could have on a team’s confidence and overall performance.
Chelsea, after a disappointing sixth-place finish last season, have been investing heavily in new talent under their new manager, Enzo Maresca. They’ve already signed 10 players this transfer window, including big deals like Pedro Neto for £54 million and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall for £30 million.
Despite these acquisitions, Chelsea is still looking to strengthen their attacking options. They’ve been monitoring Napoli’s Victor Osimhen, but his £500,000-per-week wage demands have complicated any potential deal.
As an alternative, Calvert-Lewin has emerged as a more affordable option. While Lampard once valued him much higher, Everton’s current asking price for the striker is reportedly around £37 million, and they might accept even less this late in the transfer window, especially with his contract set to expire next June.
Newcastle United was close to signing Calvert-Lewin earlier in the window, but the deal fell through due to personal terms. However, they could still be in the running, meaning Chelsea may need to act quickly if they want to secure his services before the transfer deadline.
