Chelsea in Talks to Move to Earls Court Amid Plans for Increased Stadium Capacity
Chelsea Football Club is reportedly in discussions to move from Stamford Bridge to Earls Court as part of efforts to increase their stadium capacity, according to The Guardian. Currently, Stamford Bridge holds 42,000 fans, but the club’s new owners are prioritizing a larger venue. However, expanding the current stadium has proven difficult, prompting the club to explore alternative locations in west London.
Chelsea has held talks with Transport for London regarding the potential use of the Earls Court site, although the Earl’s Court Development Committee (ECDC) has plans for a mixed-use development, which does not include a football stadium. The ECDC’s plans are set to be presented to local councils next week, posing a potential obstacle to Chelsea’s ambitions.
The club is reportedly eyeing the Lillie Bridge Depot as the possible location for a new stadium. However, Chelsea will also need an agreement with Chelsea Pitch Owners (CPO), who hold the freehold to Stamford Bridge, before moving forward with any new developments.
While moving to Earls Court is being considered, staying at Stamford Bridge has not been completely ruled out, though redevelopment has presented significant challenges. If Stamford Bridge were to be demolished, Chelsea may need a temporary home, with Wembley Stadium as the most likely option.
