Chelsea’s Five-Point Plan to Bolster Their Squad
The 2024 summer transfer window could potentially burst into life over the coming weeks now that Euro 2024 and the Copa America have concluded.
With players now focusing on their club futures, transfer activities are expected to accelerate. Chelsea, in particular, have been active, securing six new additions:
Tosin Adarabioyo, Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, Omari Kellyman, Marc Guiu, Renato Veiga, and a pre-contract agreement with Estevao Willian for next summer.
As Chelsea gear up for the new season under Enzo Maresca, here’s what else needs to happen to assemble his dream squad:
1. Sign a Striker
Chelsea still lack a prolific goalscorer, a crucial component of their successful teams in the past. Although Cole Palmer, Nicolas Jackson, and Christopher Nkunku have potential, adding a top striker could significantly boost their performance.
Victor Osimhen, Viktor Gyokeres, Jonathan David, Alexander Isak, Julian Alvarez, and Jhon Duran have been linked, but securing a high-caliber striker will require a substantial investment.
2. Make Goalkeeper and Left-Back Decisions
Maresca must decide on his primary goalkeeper between Robert Sanchez and Djordje Petrovic, or potentially bring in a new shot-stopper.
Additionally, the left-back position needs clarity. Marc Cucurella’s impressive form for Spain at Euro 2024 and towards the end of last season could solidify his role, with Ben Chilwell and new signing Veiga as alternatives.
3. Resolve Gallagher’s Future
Conor Gallagher’s situation needs addressing. With one year left on his contract, Chelsea must decide whether to extend his stay or cash in now to avoid losing him for a reduced fee in January or for free next summer.
Given his strong performances last season, many fans hope he remains a key part of the squad.
4. Facilitate Kepa and Lukaku Exits
Chelsea need to offload high-earning players like Kepa Arrizabalaga and Romelu Lukaku, who do not have long-term futures at the club.
Kepa, linked with a move to Saudi Arabia, and Lukaku, possibly reuniting with Antonio Conte at Napoli, should be sold to free up wages and streamline the squad.
5. Arrange Smart Loan Moves
With a large squad, several players could benefit from loan spells. Young talents like Alfie Gilchrist, Andrey Santos, Angelo Gabriel, David Datro Fofana, Alex Matos, Mason Burstow, Deivid Washington, Cesare Casadei, Bashir Humphreys, and Lesley Ugochukwu could gain valuable experience and development time elsewhere, ensuring they are better prepared to contribute in the future.
By addressing these key areas, Chelsea can build a balanced and competitive squad ready to challenge for top honors in the upcoming season.
