Enzo Maresca has revealed his delight at Cesare Casadei’s adaptation to a new role as a holding midfielder following Chelsea’s 4-2 win over Gent in the Conference League.
Despite making 11 changes from their previous fixture, Chelsea secured their fifth consecutive win under Maresca, with goals from Renato Veiga, Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, Pedro Neto, and Christopher Nkunku.
Casadei, who played as an attacking midfielder on loan at Leicester City last year, made his European debut for Chelsea and impressed Maresca with his performance in the new position.
Maresca praised Casadei’s physicality and growing ability on the ball, noting the shift in football toward needing more physical players in midfield.
“Cesare played very well tonight,” Maresca said. “Last year, he was in a different position, but now we are using him as a holding midfielder.
His physical presence off the ball is crucial, and he is improving his one-touch passing. There is still room for growth, but he’s heading in the right direction.”
Maresca also highlighted the need for his team to develop a more ruthless edge, as Chelsea conceded a late second goal. “Even when you’re 4-1 up, you need to stay switched on until the final whistle,” he added.
Chelsea will look to extend their winning streak when they face Nottingham Forest on Sunday.
