Gary Lineker Slams Declan Rice Red Card Decision as Arsenal Prepares for North London Derby Without Key Midfielders
Gary Lineker has expressed his frustration over Declan Rice’s controversial red card during Arsenal’s match against Brighton.
The decision, upheld by a referee assessment panel, rules Rice out of Sunday’s crucial North London Derby against Tottenham.
The panel, consisting of ex-players and officials, backed referee Chris Kavanagh, stating that Rice’s interference with the ball was “clear, deliberate and impactful.”
Lineker, along with Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta, has voiced his disagreement. On Twitter, the Match of the Day presenter called the decision “utter nonsense,” echoing Arteta’s post-match confusion regarding inconsistencies in how the rules were applied during the game.
With Rice suspended, Arsenal faces a midfield crisis. Mikel Merino is sidelined with a shoulder injury, and captain Martin Odegaard may also miss the derby after suffering an ankle injury on international duty.
This leaves Arsenal relying on Jorginho, Thomas Partey, and possibly Kai Havertz, who may drop deeper into the midfield.
