Jadon Sancho’s Awkward Chelsea Blunder: Mistaken Identity in First Enzo Maresca Meeting
Jadon Sancho seems to have made an early misstep after joining Chelsea on loan from Manchester United.
In his first interview with the club, Sancho mistakenly claimed that new Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca was a key reason behind his decision to move to Stamford Bridge, referencing their supposed history at Manchester City.
Sancho mentioned that Maresca, who he thought he met during his time at City, was instrumental in his decision to join Chelsea, saying, “I knew him from when I was at Man City when he was with Pep [Guardiola].” However, this account doesn’t add up, as Sancho left City in 2017 to join Borussia Dortmund, while Maresca didn’t join City until 2020 as the head of their development squad.
This mix-up has left Sancho red-faced, as it seems he confused Maresca with another coach from his time under Pep Guardiola’s reign at City.
Despite this blunder, the 24-year-old winger is looking to reignite his career after a turbulent time at Manchester United, where he had a public fallout with Erik ten Hag.
Maresca, who is under pressure following a mixed start to his Chelsea tenure, is likely to brush off the confusion, focusing instead on Sancho’s potential contributions on the pitch.
However, with competition for a starting place fierce, including players like Joao Felix, Christopher Nkunku, and Mykhaylo Mudryk, Sancho will need to impress quickly if he hopes to secure regular playing time under his new boss.
Chelsea fans will be hoping that Sancho can overcome the early stumble and focus on delivering strong performances in what promises to be a competitive battle for first-team spots.
