John Obi Mikel Urges Arsenal to Pursue Tottenham Target Ivan Toney as Transfer Window Nears Closure
Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur are still active in the transfer market as the new Premier League season unfolds, with both North London rivals aiming for significant achievements this campaign.
Arsenal, under Mikel Arteta, is expected to be in the title race once again, while Ange Postecoglou hopes to end Tottenham’s trophy drought.
With the transfer window closing soon, former Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel has suggested that Arsenal should target Ivan Toney, a player also on Tottenham’s radar.
Toney, who is in the final year of his contract with Brentford, has attracted interest from multiple clubs. He was notably left out of Brentford’s squad for their opening Premier League match, fueling speculation about his future.
Arsenal has long been linked with Toney, and reports earlier in the summer suggested that the striker had agreed on personal terms with Tottenham. While Spurs have already signed Dominic Solanke, rumors persist that they could still move for Toney.
Speaking on beIN Sports, Mikel emphasized that Arsenal “needs” a proven goalscorer like Toney. He noted that while Kai Havertz has performed well, Arsenal could benefit from a striker with Toney’s track record.
Mikel also acknowledged that a lucrative move to Saudi Arabia might tempt Toney but maintained that the striker would be an excellent fit for Arsenal—or even Aston Villa.
With Toney potentially available for a bargain price of around £30 million, due to his contract situation, both Arsenal and Tottenham could capitalize on the opportunity to sign a prolific Premier League striker.
However, it remains to be seen if either club will make a move before the transfer window closes.
