Leandro Trossard is already planning for his future beyond football, even though he’s currently focused on his career at Arsenal.
The Belgian forward, who joined the Gunners less than two years ago, has been laying the foundation for life after his playing days, despite still being actively involved on the pitch, including playing 180 minutes and scoring for Belgium during the international break.
Trossard didn’t wait long to start equipping himself with the skills needed for his post-football career.
While at Brighton, he took advantage of the Covid-19 pandemic lockdown to work on a coaching course, earning his A-licence. This step was part of his broader strategy to keep his options open after retiring from the game.
Reflecting on his experience, Trossard admitted that while he enjoyed leading training sessions, the theoretical aspects of coaching were challenging.
He explained that designing training sessions required a lot more effort than he anticipated, highlighting the complexity behind the scenes of football coaching.
The Belgian also noted the challenge of refereeing during training sessions, realizing how difficult it can be to make quick decisions that players often take for granted. This experience has given him a greater appreciation for the detailed work that goes into the coaching profession.
Although Trossard isn’t entirely committed to becoming a coach after his playing days are over, he has developed some ideas about his football philosophy.
Influenced by his time under Mikel Arteta and other coaches, he envisions a style of play focused on attacking and offensive football, though he’s aware of the significant commitment that comes with a head coaching role.
As he’s grown older, Trossard has also developed a keen interest in the analytical side of the game.
He now values understanding his performance metrics and using statistics to enhance his recovery and improve his gameplay.
This focus on data and analysis is a shift from his early days in Belgium when training was much more straightforward.
