Manchester United are in talks to sign a midfielder from Burnley, who is reported to be faster than their star player Marcus Rashford.
With sporting director Dan Ashworth leading the charge, United are looking to bolster their midfield, alongside potential deals for Bayern Munich defenders Noussair Mazraoui and Matthijs de Ligt.
Current Midfield Lineup and Plans
Under manager Erik ten Hag, United currently have a strong lineup of senior midfielders, including Kobbie Mainoo, Scott McTominay, Casemiro, Christian Eriksen, Mason Mount, and Bruno Fernandes.
Despite this depth, there seems to be a desire for a long-term replacement for Casemiro, as rumors of his potential exit from Old Trafford continue to circulate.
In recent months, Casemiro has been linked with a move away from United, with Saudi Pro League club Al Ittihad showing interest. Last month, the club opened discussions with United to sign the Brazilian midfielder.
Pundit Jamie Carragher has also suggested that Casemiro should consider a move to Saudi Arabia or the MLS, citing his performance against Crystal Palace as a signal that he might be nearing the end of his top-level career.
“But I think Casemiro, deadly serious, should know tonight as an experienced player that he should only have another three games left at the top level, the next two league games and the cup final, and then he should be thinking, ‘I need to go to the MLS or Saudi’. I’m deadly serious. His agent, the team of people around him, they need to tell him, ‘this has to stop.'” – Jamie Carragher
Among the potential targets to strengthen United’s midfield, Paris Saint-Germain’s Manuel Ugarte has been mentioned frequently, though no deal has been finalized. This situation has led United to explore other options, such as AS Monaco’s Youssouf Fofana.
Additionally, Burnley’s Sander Berge has caught the attention of Manchester United. Initial talks have reportedly been held with Berge’s representatives, and an update has emerged regarding a possible move from Turf Moor to Old Trafford.
According to Sky Sports reporter Dharmesh Sheth, United have begun discussions with Burnley about acquiring Sander Berge, exploring the potential terms of the deal.
TEAMtalk further reports that Berge has expressed his willingness to join Manchester United, with personal terms already agreed upon. United are preparing a bid in the region of £25 million for the 26-year-old Norwegian midfielder.
Berge’s impressive speed, clocked at 35.90 km/h, places him among the top 10 fastest players in the Premier League last season, even surpassing Marcus Rashford’s top speed of 35.71 km/h.
Standing at 6 foot 5, Berge joined Burnley from Sheffield United for £12 million a year ago and made 40 appearances in all competitions under manager Vincent Kompany in the 2023/24 season.
Given his height, speed, and versatility, Berge could provide United with both defensive solidity and attacking prowess in the midfield.
An immediate return to the Premier League with Manchester United seems likely for the Norwegian, offering a promising addition to the Red Devils’ squad as they continue to build for future success.
