Manchester City Begins Pre-Season with Limited Squad Due to Euro and Copa Commitments
Manchester City has officially started their 2024/25 preparations, with ten first-team players reporting back for the first day of pre-season training.
Due to the involvement of 15 players in Euro 2024 and the Copa America, the squad is notably diminished.
Among the returning players is Erling Haaland, entering his third season at the Etihad after a summer off.
Jack Grealish, who missed out on England’s Euro 2024 squad, is also back and eager to secure his place in the team.
Rico Lewis and Kalvin Phillips, both excluded from Gareth Southgate’s squad, have returned to training, with Phillips expected to join the USA tour despite an uncertain future at City.
Goalkeeper Ederson, amidst speculation about a move to Saudi Arabia, returned for training alongside Stefan Ortega and Scott Carson. Young players Maximo Perrone, James McAtee, and Oscar Bobb also reported back, along with several youth prospects.
The team is set to fly to America for pre-season friendlies against Celtic, AC Milan, Barcelona, and Chelsea. City’s competitive season will kick off on August 10th against Manchester United in the Community Shield.
Josko Gvardiol and Mateo Kovacic will join the squad in the USA, while the remaining players involved in summer international tournaments will return by early August.
