Manchester City to Announce First Major Summer Signing on Today
The first major arrival into Pep Guardiola’s first-team squad this summer is set to be announced on Wednesday, according to the latest reports.
Manchester City officials have been relatively slow in their pursuit of improvements within Pep Guardiola’s squad this summer, despite identifying a number of positions that could require recruitment.
The Premier League champions are, for example, aware that the squad requires a more suitable and reliable back-up option to Rodrigo in defensive midfield, turning to the likes of Bruno Guimaraes and Joshua Kimmich as potential options.
Elsewhere, there is believed to be a monitoring interest in signing a new left-back solution to replace Sergio Gomez, but not necessarily a new name to take over the role ahead of the likes of Nathan Ake and Josko Gvardiol.
But this week could finally see Manchester City formally announce their first new name into the first-team picture, with reports from Spain revealing the latest details around a much-anticipated arrival.
According to the information of Spanish newspaper Sport, as translated and relayed by Sport Witness, Savio will be presented as a new Manchester City player on Wednesday, with the understanding being that he will sign a five-year deal with the Premier League champions.
The report goes on to reveal that Barcelona also considered signing the 20-year-old but had to back off because of their financial situation, while Girona were hoping to take him back on loan for the upcoming season but UEFA rules will prevent such a deal.
From the side of the player, it is claimed that Savio wants to play under Pep Guardiola as he believes he can make him a better player and help him feature regularly for Brazil, whilst the Manchester City manager is already waiting for him.
At present, it remains unknown as to whether Savio will partake in Manchester City’s complete pre-season schedule in the United States, or whether his first involvement in training will revolve around FA Community Shield preparations in early August.
The 20-year-old remains eligible for an additional holiday period this summer following his involvement at Copa America with Brazil’s senior national team, despite their relatively early exit from the competition through a penalty shoot-out against Uruguay.
Manchester City view Savio as a player capable of operating on both wings in their front-three, and coaching staff are understood to be intrigued by the possibility of having such a versatile option at their disposal following Jeremy Doku’s greater success on the left.
