Manchester United Injury Crisis: Erik ten Hag Confirms Three Key Defenders Out for Upcoming Barnsley Clash
Erik ten Hag has confirmed that three players will miss Manchester United’s upcoming match against Barnsley on Tuesday.
During United’s 3-0 win over Southampton at St Mary’s, Ten Hag faced a familiar issue as he had to replace three of his four defenders, with a fourth also struggling by the end of the game.
Lisandro Martinez had to be substituted with what appeared to be a groin strain, though he walked off with a smile alongside Ten Hag.
Martinez’s center-back partner, Matthijs de Ligt, was also taken off but later described his issue as merely a cramp.
Harry Maguire, who replaced Martinez, also suffered a knock and was limping by the end of the match.
The most concerning injury was that of right-back Noussair Mazraoui, who left the pitch to get treatment and is now doubtful for Tuesday’s game.
With Victor Lindelof, Leny Yoro, Luke Shaw, and Tyrell Malacia already sidelined, Ten Hag may struggle to field a full defense for the match.
Post-match, Ten Hag informed manutd.com that Shaw will not be available for Tuesday’s game. Regarding Shaw, Mason Mount, and Rasmus Hojlund, he said:
“We need everyone and hopefully players will return. They won’t be back for the next game, but we hope to have them in the coming weeks.”
Malacia, Yoro, and Lindelof were not mentioned, indicating they might be further from returning.
Ten Hag expressed hope that De Ligt’s injury isn’t serious and that they will assess it soon.
Currently, Diogo Dalot and Jonny Evans are the only fully fit defenders available for Tuesday. If necessary, young Harry Amass, who impressed during pre-season, might be used at left-back, and Casemiro could be deployed as an emergency center-back, as he was in the final moments of the Southampton game.
