Marc Cucurella Speaks on His Chelsea Future Amid New Left-Back Signing and Transfer Rumors
Marc Cucurella has made it clear he intends to remain at Chelsea this summer, despite rumors suggesting he could be among the players the club may sell soon.
This statement comes as the Blues are nearing the signing of a young left-back to bolster their defense.
According to football.london, Basel’s 20-year-old star, Renato Veiga, is expected to complete a medical at Cobham following a £14 million agreement. Chelsea is also close to securing Boca Juniors’ center-back Aaron Anselmino for £17 million, though he is likely to stay in Argentina for the upcoming season.
These moves are part of a major youth recruitment strategy initiated by Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital over the last two summers. Despite notable player sales, such as Ian Maatsen (£37.5 million) and Lewis Hall (£28 million), Chelsea has continued to stockpile promising talent.
Cucurella, who joined Chelsea for £62 million in the first summer of the new ownership, has managed to maintain his position despite facing challenges and dips in form. His recent performances with Spain at Euro 2024 have been impressive, suggesting he could have a role under Enzo Maresca in the 2024/25 season.
However, Chelsea’s pursuit of additional left-back options leaves Cucurella’s future at the club uncertain. He was close to leaving a year ago but remained due to injuries within the squad, earning another opportunity under then-manager Mauricio Pochettino.
In a recent interview before Spain’s semi-final against France, Cucurella discussed his future: “La Liga is my home, but I’m very happy in England. It’s a fantastic experience for me and my family.”
Cucurella, who progressed through Barcelona’s academy before shining at Getafe and moving to Brighton, eventually joined Chelsea, outbidding interest from Manchester City. His high transfer fee has been a point of contention, with Gary Neville commenting on the staggering cost: “That price tag still astounds everybody to this day.”
Despite challenges and criticism, Cucurella has delivered a solid performance in Germany, helping Spain play some of the tournament’s best football under Luis de la Fuente, who has leaned on youth talent like Nico Williams and Lamine Yamal.
Chelsea has shown interest in Nico Williams, but high wage demands have stalled any potential transfer progress. Cucurella speaks fondly of his relationship with Williams: “Our chemistry extends beyond the field. We connected naturally. We’re both happy people, and I support him in whatever he needs.”
Looking beyond Euro 2024, Cucurella aims to build similar connections with his Chelsea teammates and solidify his role in the squad.
