Martin Zubimendi Addresses Arsenal and Liverpool Transfer Speculation
Martin Zubimendi, who was linked with potential moves to both Liverpool and Arsenal during the summer, has spoken about his decision to stay at Real Sociedad amid ongoing transfer rumors.
The Spanish international was close to joining Liverpool after impressing at Euro 2024.
Liverpool had plans to trigger Zubimendi’s £51 million release clause in August, believing the midfielder was eager to join them. However, the transfer collapsed after Zubimendi chose to remain at Real Sociedad following a heartfelt plea from his boyhood club.
Before this, Arsenal was also rumored to be interested in Zubimendi, with speculation that they might attempt to outbid Liverpool for his signature.
Reports from Spain now suggest that Zubimendi could be back on Premier League clubs’ radar in January.
Manchester City is reportedly considering making a move for him following Rodri’s ACL injury last month. Arsenal could also renew their interest, given that both Jorginho and Thomas Partey are out of contract next summer.
Arsenal recently signed Zubimendi’s former teammate Mikel Merino, which could also influence their pursuit.
However, when asked about the transfer rumors during a press conference ahead of Spain’s UEFA Nations League matches against Denmark and Serbia, Zubimendi reaffirmed his commitment to Real Sociedad.
“There are always rumours, but I’ve always thought that the best solution for me is staying at Real Sociedad,” Zubimendi said. “I still have a lot to contribute to this club, and I want to continue growing and developing here.”
