Mikel Arteta Identifies Two Key Moments That Cost Arsenal the Title
Mikel Arteta has identified two crucial moments that he believes cost Arsenal the 2023-24 Premier League title, after they narrowly missed out to Manchester City.
Arsenal, aiming to secure their first English top-flight trophy in two decades, saw the title race go down to the wire on the final day of the season. However, their hopes were dashed as Manchester City emerged victorious by beating West Ham.
Arteta, reflecting on the season, highlighted two key moments that he believes were decisive. Firstly, he mentioned the 2-0 defeat at home to Aston Villa in April, where Arsenal squandered opportunities in the first half that could have changed the outcome of the match.
Additionally, Arteta referenced Manchester City’s 2-0 win over Tottenham in the penultimate round of games, suggesting that Arsenal could have been champions if the result had gone differently.
He emphasized the fine margins in football, acknowledging that these small moments can have a significant impact on the title race. Despite falling short, Arteta praised the club and the team for their efforts, particularly in challenging the formidable Manchester City.
Looking ahead, Arteta expressed confidence that Arsenal’s time for Premier League glory will come, hinting at potential reinforcements in the summer transfer market to strengthen the squad.
‘If we do what we have to do, we’re going to be closer and at the end we’ll win [the title],’ Arteta added. ‘When, I don’t know. But if we keep knocking and being that close, in the end it will happen.
‘There’s only one way to do it: you have to be more determined, you have to be more ambitious, you have to have a lot of courage and push every limit in everything that we have. That’s the next step.
‘First one and most important [plan for the summer] is how we are going to get these players to a different level. That is my first job and after that, if we still don’t have enough, for sure we will have to do everything we can to fulfil those gaps [with new signings].’
