Premier League Clubs to Reject Wolves’ Bid to Scrap VAR, AGM to Discuss Financial Rules
Wolves’ bold proposal to eliminate VAR from the Premier League is set to be rejected by other clubs during their two-day AGM in Harrogate starting Friday, TalkSPORT understands. While VAR has been a source of controversy since its introduction in the 2019/20 season, Wolves’ motion to scrap it altogether was always seen as a long shot, requiring the support of at least 14 clubs to pass.
Wolves have outlined nine reasons for their stance, citing unintended negative consequences and a detrimental impact on the relationship between fans and football. Despite their argument that the minimal increase in accuracy does not justify the damage to the spirit of the game, the proposal is unlikely to gain the necessary support.
In contrast, a proposal from Aston Villa to increase the permissible financial losses under Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSR) from £105 million to £135 million over three years is expected to be approved. This move would give clubs more financial flexibility, aligning with growing expenditures in the modern game.
Wolves’ Position on VAR
In a statement, Wolves emphasized that the introduction of VAR was made in good faith but has led to numerous unintended negative consequences. They called for a critical debate on its future, suggesting its removal from the 2024/25 season onwards. The club stressed that their proposal was made with respect for the Premier League, the referees’ body (PGMOL), and their competitors.
Premier League’s Response
A Premier League spokesperson confirmed that a discussion on VAR will be facilitated at the AGM, acknowledging the concerns but expressing full support for the system. The league, along with PGMOL, remains committed to improving VAR for the benefit of the game and fans.
Proposed Changes to VAR Communication
PGMOL chief Howard Webb has proposed enhancing the communication of VAR decisions. One suggestion includes using PA systems in stadiums to explain decisions to the crowd, aiming to improve transparency and understanding among fans.
Recent VAR Controversies
VAR has been a significant talking point this season, with several controversial decisions. Notably, Nottingham Forest issued a strong statement against VAR officiating in their 2-0 defeat to Everton, accusing VAR official Stuart Atwell of bias.
Another high-profile incident occurred during Tottenham’s 2-1 win against Liverpool, where Luis Diaz’s goal was incorrectly ruled out for offside. The PGMOL later released the VAR room audio, describing the mistake as a ‘significant human error’.
As the AGM unfolds, it is clear that while VAR will remain a part of the Premier League, discussions on improving its implementation and addressing financial regulations will be at the forefront of the agenda.
