Scott McTominay Nears €30 Million Napoli Move Amid Final Payoff Negotiations with Manchester United
Scott McTominay is on the verge of joining Napoli for €30 million, but the deal hinges on negotiations with Manchester United regarding a “payoff,” according to Fabrizio Romano.
McTominay, 27, has attracted interest from various European clubs this summer, with United open to selling their academy graduate to raise funds for new signings.
While Erik ten Hag is a fan of the Scottish international and is open to him staying at Old Trafford, there is an understanding that his departure could benefit the club financially.
McTominay is one of the few players at United who could fetch a significant transfer fee, and his homegrown status means the fee would count as ‘pure profit’ from a financial fair play perspective.
Napoli reached an agreement with United to sign McTominay for €30 million (£25.45 million) earlier today, including a sell-on percentage clause. Romano reports that McTominay has “accepted Napoli and their project,” with Italian media suggesting he is eager to play under Napoli manager Antonio Conte.
The sale of McTominay is expected to play a crucial role in United’s pursuit of PSG midfielder Manuel Ugarte, who is their top target to strengthen Ten Hag’s midfield this summer.
Romano tweeted, “Scott McTominay has already accepted Napoli and their project. Details to be discussed about his payoff, similar to Wan-Bissaka. This is the main part to fix + personal terms. Club to club agreement done with Man United for €30m fee (add-ons included) plus sell-on clause.”

McTominay is expected to travel to Italy next week, with a medical possibly scheduled for Tuesday. However, there are still details to be ironed out between United officials and McTominay’s representatives regarding the payoff, similar to the situation with Wan-Bissaka.
Wan-Bissaka recently joined West Ham in a £15 million move after five years at Manchester United, but the deal was nearly derailed by his demand for a £7 million payoff. A similar issue arose last summer when Harry Maguire’s transfer to West Ham fell through due to rejected payoff demands.
While there is no indication that McTominay’s move to Napoli will be affected by the payoff negotiations, the situation highlights the challenges United has faced under the Glazers’ ownership. INEOS, which gained full control over football operations at Old Trafford in February, has been working to address these issues throughout the summer.
