Thomas Tuchel Expresses Desire to Return to Chelsea After Talks with Club
Thomas Tuchel is reportedly eager to return to Chelsea, less than two years after his departure, feeling he has unfinished business at Stamford Bridge.
This news comes in the wake of Chelsea’s announcement on Tuesday evening that they have parted ways with Mauricio Pochettino by mutual consent, prompting the search for a new manager.
A variety of candidates have been linked to the position, including former Brighton manager Roberto De Zerbi and Ipswich Town’s Kieran McKenna. However, a familiar face could take the helm, with Sky Sport Germany reporting that Tuchel is a “very concrete” option for the role.
Tuchel, who was the first significant managerial casualty under Clearlake Capital’s ownership of Chelsea, was dismissed in September 2022, just 100 days into their tenure. Despite his clashes with the club’s new owners during a period of significant upheaval, Tuchel’s record at Chelsea was impressive, securing three trophies, including the Champions League, in just 20 months.
The 50-year-old’s tenure at Bayern Munich has been challenging, culminating in a third-place finish in the Bundesliga. Earlier this year, Tuchel announced he would leave Bayern at the end of the season. Although Bayern made a last-minute attempt to retain him, his agent, Olaf Meinking, confirmed that no agreement was reached, making Saturday’s 4-2 defeat to Hoffenheim his final game with the club. “There were talks, but we didn’t reach an agreement, so the decision of February still stands,” Tuchel stated.
Linked also with a potential move to Manchester United should Erik ten Hag be sacked, Tuchel appears keen to return to the Premier League. Sky Sport Germany indicates that he would welcome a return to Chelsea, suggesting a strong desire to continue his managerial journey in west London.
As Chelsea embarks on this crucial managerial search, securing the right candidate will be essential to restoring stability and steering the club towards future successes. Tuchel’s potential return could bring a sense of continuity and unfinished ambition, aligning with Chelsea’s high aspirations.
